Railways are a powerful driver for the low-carbon transition.
An efficient network will make it possible to switch market shares from air and road freight to a low-emission means of transport.
In total, in 2018, 24% of global CO2 emissions due to energy combustion came from the transport sector. On this part, passenger and freight road transport (cars, trucks, buses, two-wheelers) is by far the main responsible: nearly three quarters of CO2 emissions. Aviation and navigation are roughly equal: just over 11% each. The rail emits very little (1.2%).
